BLOG POST #10

This is a picture of the Anthers surrounding the Stigma. This shows that the flower has both male and female anatomy. In most cases the flower is one gender. The male and females are two individuals and not one flower.

This is a picture of the Anther of the flower. The Anther produces pollen grains. Anther is where the producing of the haploid male gametophytes. This is the male anatomy of the flower.

This is the part of the Carpel name stigma which is the tip of the Carpel. The Stigma is a sticky portion and is where pollen land. The Style is connected to the Stigma and it is a Stalk for the Stigma. the Stigma and Style is part of the female in the flower.

This is a picture of a flower that has its part ripped off except the Ovary. The Ovary has been sliced in the middle and find the Ovule which is the unfertilized seeds of the plants. The Ovules has been removed and shown ( the green dot near the stem). P.s I know its small.

This is the stigma of the plant. It is sticky and pollen grains here.  Inside the stigma at the inner
most part of the plant where the carpel lies where the female gametophytes are made.

This picture displays the ovary of the brassica olleracea.  The ovarary contains  one or more ovules
where female gametophytes are made.

This is a picture of the brassica oleraccea flower. It's petals are yellow and flimsy and inside
the flower it contains reproductive organs.
This is the anthers. This is the pollen producing part of the flower where meiosis takes place
where it produces haploid male gametophytes.

Fertilization occurs everyday in plants. The basic parts that make this process happen
are the anthers and the ovary. First the sperm cell fuses with the egg nucleus to produce
a diploid zygote. The zygote will grow into the new plant embryo. Next the other sperm
cells fuse with the two endosperm nuclei in the embryo sac to form a triploid endosperm
which nourishes the seedling as it grows.

Who wants to live a million years

1. It took me about 2 tries to win the game. I think it took that long because some of the animals were not adapting to the environment as better as the other ones. In real life I think it means that the animals have adapt better.
2. The animals I picked had long and short legs, had dots, and stripes and were also the same color. The ones that lived longer had long legs and stripes. And were also skinnier. I think the longer legs survived longer because they can run faster and are taller. Also more diversity made them live longer
3. Yes, it would be affected by genetic drift because there many different species. The evidence I saw from the game were over the years were that they were adapting and forming new species.
4. The animals that seemed to be dominant were the ones with the longer legs and the ones with stripes. And the ones that were recessive were the ones with the dots and shorter legs.
5. No fur is for hot weather, fur is for cold weather, large predator is stripes and new tall food source has long necks and long legs.
6. I would improve it by picking animals that looked more alike and had the same type of features.

The quote I chose to explain from the movie was, “Jerome was engineered with everything needed to get into Gattaca… except the desire to do so”-Vincent. This quote is relevant to the film because Jerome Eugene was the perfect candidate for Gattaca, he had the intelligence, the brain and he was perfectly healthy before the accident. Even his middle name “Eugene” meant perfect genes. He had everything except the passion and heart. Vincent would kill to be Jerome because Vincent’s dream is to go to space and he doesn’t qualify at all.
One recurring symbol in the film was the ladder symbolizing as a DNA helix. For example: Vincent is a “borrowed ladder” or the spiralling staircase at Jeromes house that no one lives above. This scenario symbolizes genes that Vincent doesn’t have. Above the staircase is where people with healthy hearts are and Vincent doesn’t go up there because he feels like he doesn’t belong. Finally at the end of the movie when he goes up the stairs and reveals to Irene that he is actually Vincent is a big scene because no one knows but him and Jerome. It shows that he trusts her and really likes her.
One theme in the movie is Perfection vs. Happiness. In the film there isn’t happiness or fun because if you are too worried about being perfect you’ll miss out on all the good things in life. In the movie Vincent had to always worry about about being so perfect and not being caught hat he was never truly happy. At the end when he told Irene who he really was and finally got to go to space he could finally enjoy it all. I think the film lacks happiness because he wasn’t being himself and you can only be happy when yourself.
The question I chose to answer about my ethics was number 3: Gattaca, Vincent’s parents visited a doctor to select the best traits for his future brother. Some of the traits mentioned in Gattaca included intelligence, height and any possibility of inheritable diseases. If you decide to have a child in the future and are given the opportunity to select special traits, would you do so? I think this question is very controversial. In my opinion I would say no. I want my child to come out just the way they are. Even if they have some problems thats okay because they will always have something to get better at. If my parents had picked out all my traits and qualities I would feel like a robot. But I can also see how parents would want to pick out their kids’ traits to make sure they don't get diseases. Thats the only thing I would pick to make sure happens to them, I just want them to be healthy and happy.

In the movie “Gattaca” there is a person who wants to go far in life but has a heart failure which makes him slow down on his life dream. Vincent wants work in this business but won’t accept him because of his genes. Vincent is sad and upset he can’t make his dreams because people told him he wasn’t eligible. In the movie he says “They used to say that a child conceived in love has a greater chance in happiness’’ he means that people only think about a love a person gets. Vincent is saying people don’t care for love they only care for their genes and what they carry in their blood.
In the movie genes are for a person’s race. In the movie they separate people by their genes and they do that in two class the people with perfect genes and the people with non-perfect genes like Vincent. This makes some sense cause people with a heart condition can’t work in something that involves in extreme action and people won’t hire people for their color. They wanted genes to define someone’s race because they probably didn’t want problems with people skins. They also did it so they can take care of the “invalids” so they won’t get hurt while they work.
This movie is all about the human spirit. The human spirit in the movie is being said that anyone can overcome great adversity and there is no gene for the human spirit. In the movie Vincent is someone who is imperfection and strong will to live and chase his goals, on the other hand Jerome is a perfectly made man, lack of desire, addictions, and wants to kill himself. Vincent has a huge spirit that encourage him to keep following his dreams. Jerome just doesn't want to live even though he has the best genes ever. Even with no good genes Vincent still goes and doesn't stop for anything.

If a plant breeder wants to get a different characteristic they would have to get two different plant and try to breed it or have it in a different environment.
